Happy Chinese New Year! It is the year of the sheep (it is a goat actually but that’s just being picky) and it reminds me of the story of my husband and I on his farm in New Zealand. On the farm there are cows and sheep (and a few wild deer but they aren’t part of the story) and each time my husband and I go for a walk or out on the quad bike we have to navigate around the animals.
Cows and sheep react quite differently to invaders to their environment. Cows are quite proactive and stubborn. When we are driving the quad bike along the path, if there is a cow in the middle of the way, we have to wait until it decides to move. There’s very little chance that we are going to push the giant animal out of the way. The cow decides when the cow goes and where it goes. The cow seems to decide this as it sees us approaching.
Sheep, on the other hand, are quite reactive and flighty. When we drive down a path that is infested with sheep, the sheep scatter in all sorts of different directions. They go up, they go down, they keep running along the road in front of us getting more and more frightened of our approach. The sheep don’t know where they want to go. They go anywhere that we are not. Often times, the sheep gets separated from the rest of the group and that causes lots of problems. We avoid going on the farm during lambing season because if the lambs get separated from their mother’s they might not find their way back.
So are you more like a cow or a sheep in achieving your goals this New Year? Are you reacting to what’s going on around you & being pushed into a direction that is not your choice? Or do you have a clear idea of what you want & stand firm on getting it?
May your 2015 be a prosperous and joy-filled one.
